Mayor Karen Bass announces latest 'Inside Safe' operation under 101 Freeway on Cahuenga Houses Angelenos, clears sidewalks

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Friday announced the latest Inside Safe operation in Hollywood under the 101 Freeway on Cahuenga Boulevard in partnership with Councilmember Nithya Raman. More than 15 Angelenos who moved under the overpass following two Inside Safe operations were brought inside from today’s operation. 

“Even if tents return to locations where an Inside Safe operation housed Angelenos, we will never give up our work to save lives and that’s what we did this week on Cahuenga,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “The issue of homelessness is one that is impacting all Angelenos and we will continue knocking down obstacles in our way to confront this crisis.” 

Since December 2022, more than 21,000 Angelenos have come inside and more than 13,000 units of affordable housing are now being accelerated as a result of her executive directive to streamline their development. 

Earlier last week, Mayor Bass announced she and California Governor Gavin Newsom were moving forward with a new partnership to help keep areas near freeways clean and safe as both the State and the City continue their efforts to bring unhoused people indoors.

Initiated by the Mayor’s Office, this agreement between the Los Angeles Department of Sanitation (LASAN) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will allow City crews to house Angelenos living on Caltrans land, including freeway overpasses, and access Caltrans properties to remove trash and debris from areas near freeways in Los Angeles. This will be an important strategy to help make sure public spaces are clean and safe following successful operations that bring unhoused people inside. The State will reimburse Los Angeles for costs associated with the partnership in the Caltrans District 7 Metro Region.
