ONME Local: Santa Clara is first to recognize Juneteenth holiday; Harris gives back; Moore promoted

As far as Juneteenth, Santa Clara County was the first to make it an official paid holiday for county workers. The Board of Supervisors adopted the holiday last September, and put $2.3 million in a reserve fund to pay employees one month prior. It’s the 13th paid holiday in the county.

President Joe Biden selected Randy Moore, currently the head of the Forest Service’s regional office in Vallejo, to lead the Forest Service agency as the chief. Moore will become the first African-American to run the Forest Service, which is the second-largest landowner in the United States, and an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This historic appointment is a first in the 116-year history of the United States Forest Service created in 1905 by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Moore will take over for current Forest Service Chief Vicki Christiansen, when she steps down July 26. Christiansen has held the position since 2018.

Rookie Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris, who was born in Martinez and attended high school in the East Bay town of Antioch, joined Gov. Gavin Newsom in Santa Clara as he announced his efforts to address the state’s ongoing homelessness crisis and a new COVID-19-related rental relief program. Harris shared his personal story of when he and his family were homeless and evicted multiple times

Finally, Dudley Najieb reviews the recent "neighborhood politics" concerning the California State Senate District 10 seat available starting December 2022; three Democratic candidates are already campaigning for the seat.
