The Employment Development Department (EDD) is a California state agency that provides temporary partial-income replacement for individuals who are unemployed or have had their hours reduced through no fault of their own. EDD's unemployment insurance program pays benefits ranging from $40 to $450 per week, based on the individual's highest quarterly earnings during the base period, and is funded by the individual's employer.
Benefit payments can span up to 26 weeks, and a claim remains valid for one year. However, there is a mandatory, unpaid waiting period of seven days before benefits become payable. It's important to note that the benefit period begins the Sunday of the week in which the individual applies for unemployment benefits.
